Is Your Air Conditioner Not Working?

First of all, figure out what the problem is. Will the air conditioner simple refuse to turn on? Is it blowing air that’s warm instead of cold? Is it not getting as cold as you’d like it to? Determining the nature of the problem can help you know where to start.

Simple Issues

Start by looking at some of the basic potential problems. For example, if you have a window unit and it’s not running at all, check to see if it’s actually plugged in. Small children or pets can easily unplug an air conditioner by playing around it, or it might have gotten unplugged when you were searching for an available outlet. Settings can also be unexpectedly changed. If it’s only blowing warm air, check to see if the temperature has accidentally been turned up.

Ice Blockages

Another reason for the air conditioner not working might be that air flow is too low. This can cause ice to form inside of the AC unit, preventing cold air from coming out. Turn off the unit and let any ice melt. It might also be a good idea to check the fan belt.

Clean It Off

If the air filters of your air conditioner are covered with dust, dirt, and debris, they might be restricting airflow. Clean them off and try restarting the unit.
